For as long as I can remember St Patrick’s day has been celebrated in our house, as kids my parent’s would take us to the nearest parade , that might be Portlaoise or Roscrea or even Nenagh, that night we would watch television together and see all the other parades that were on around the country and compare them with what we had seen ourselves that day. It was always a day off similar to a Sunday, no work or School . We wore something green and we always had shamrock pinned to our collars. ( which we found in the field)
As my own kids came along, we came down to see the Parade in Kilkenny . We hadn’t got the shamrock but always included green.
That night we still watched the parades on tv and the Taoiseach of the time maybe in New York or even Washington sharing the bowl of Shamrock with the heads of state. (A gift of good luck)
St Patrick’s Day was always an Irish Day, and looking at the parades all over the world it was always a great celebration and one which is still a great Highlight of the Irish Calendar.
